Sergio had a tough childhood, growing up without a father. His mother lived in a different apartment, upstairs in the same hotel in East Los Angeles. He attended Schurr High School in Montebello, California, graduating in 1997.
After high school, Sergio focused on boxing, participating in several tournaments. He was close to winning the 1998 national gloves, the 1999 U.S. national championships, and almost became part of the 2000 U.S. Olympic team, with an amateur career record of 40 wins and 10 losses.
